After years of driving past the turnoff to Cape Charles, Va, on the way to the Bridge-Tunnel, we finally made a weekend trip earlier this spring to this town on the bay. This picture is of one of the three sunsets we watched over the Chesapeake Bay from the beach in Cape Charles. There is still an active barge terminal south of town where they were offloading some raw matierials such as gravel and sand. The town is only about six blocks wide from north to south, and maybe eight or ten blocks in from the coast. Downtown, which consists of 4 or 5 blocks on Mason overlooking the railroad tracks and harbor, was dominated by real estate offices. There were only a couple of restaurants, a convenience store with a lunch counter, the typical small town hardware store, and a few gift shops. I was surprised at the number of dilapidated houses around the town. The only homes that have been extensively remodeled were within two blocks of the beach. The land surrounding Cape Charles is being developed quite heavily with million dollar bay front homes in view to the north, and a gated golf course community to the south. The town was almost deserted on the cold weekend that we were there. Off season weekend rentals are very affordable. If you are looking for a convenient place to get away from it all, Cape Charles is a destination to consider.

The Fruitland Little League parade has been a highlight of a few past springs for our family. I always watch for the car pictured here which belongs to the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Company. According to their web site, this is a 1959 Ford Galaxy station wagon that served as a chief’s car. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.
I have posted previously about adding a Friday Photos meme to the Delmarva blog community, which received no response. I guess I will be a meme of one for now.
